Going Nowhere in a Winding Way: Labyrinth Walk at Miantonomi Tower

Sunday May 3, 2pm-3:30pm

Start + end at the Map Kiosk on Hillside Ave Loop

The group meandered up the hill together (Less than 1/4-mile, wide sloped path) and then spent time in the clearing at the top of the hill. For those seeking wide views of the island, climb the staircase to the top of the tower. For anyone afraid of heights or looking for a contemplative journey, connect with a centuries old practice of a labyrinth walk. Celebrate World labyrinth day with a meditative practice and join others across space and time with each turn in the path. Stay the entire time or take the well-marked path back to the parking area.

Please note the labyrinth is weather permitting, as dampness can harm the material.

Walk Reflections

We met on a grey Sunday afternoon in Miantanomi Park. The walk leaders Taryn and Glennie were pretty flustered as they’d just realized the keys they had to open the Tower didn’t work and that the labyrinth they brought couldn’t work since it was wet outside.

The group was undaunted, however, as many of us had never even been to the outside of the Tower. Glennie and Taryn walked the group up the winding path until we were in a magical clearing, and there at the end of it was this Tower.

We spent the rest of the hour talking about some current community dreams for the park. Taryn was working on movie nights and Glennie was hopeful that the Tower could be open more regularly. We shared ideas on public vs private spaces and marveled at yet another hidden gem of open space on Aquidneck Island.
